County League 2021

The County League in all divisions will have a different look this year with each division split into teams of six which means we will have only five Co League fixtures this year. The final details about relegation and promotion are to be finalised but it’s certain that teams will have to play without their county players. We will also have a team in Division 6 and they will also have five games.

Kerry Team

Congratulations to Paul O’Shea who made his debut for Kerry on Saturday and capped an impressive showing with a great point. Well done also to Brendan Kealy who was part of the panel for the day and selector James Foley. We wish them and their colleagues all the best for the year ahead.

Sadly on Good Friday again this year we are mourning the loss of someone associated with the club following the death of Derry O’Leary at this time last year.
The club was saddened to hear yesterday of the death of one of our joint-Presidents in Paddy Casey of Tournamanagh. Paddy played senior football for the club between 1951 and 1959 and although it was a lean period, Paddy and his team-mates always represented the club with pride.
However it is as a loyal supporter of the club that we will most remember Paddy by. He attended most games and took such pride in seeing us win the All-Ireland Intermediate title in 2019 and he never uttered a negative sentiment about the players or club in general. He appreciated the smallest gesture and always acknowledged the importance of the work of the club in the life and youth of the parish.
Many felt his interview with Marty Morrissey the night of the 2018 social was their personal highlight and a very touching moment. Above all else Paddy will be missed for his gentle nature.
May he Rest in eternal peace.

AGM: Our AGM was held last Sunday virtually and was well co-ordinated by Ciara Kelly.
A report was given on the progress of the club’s development both structurally and financially by the development committee and they are happy that it is nearing completion and should be ready for the start of this season. Chairman Eugene McSweeney outlined the huge input from volunteers, sponsors, club members and the wider Kilcummin community at home and abroad that made this possible. He also noted the dedication of the main developer and the sub-contractor in completing a facility that will be enjoyed for generations to come and lauded the commitment of the development committee over the last three years to see it to its conclusion.
Joint Treasurer Tim Casey stepped down after an incredible 16 years and was replaced by Pat O Connor, while Willie Fleming was appointed Assistant Chairperson. Kieran Fleming takes over Insurance officer from Donal Dwyer while Brid Fleming becomes club registrar. PRO for the last 8 years Michael O Riordan has stepped down and the executive will undertake to fill that position in the coming weeks.

Kilcummin GAA Development

As the Gym and dressing rooms facility development nears completion with the Gym being fitted out and the last touches being put to the other facilities, the development committee would like to thank all those who made this dream a reality. The committee are putting in the order next week for the “Wall of Champions” bricks and the business packages signs will be located on the road side as you enter the club.

If you purchased a brick or a sign, make sure you have given your details. The default inscription will be the family name and townland address. This is the final opportunity if you wish to purchase a package or brick so if you need either contact 087 7614850. The contribution of the volunteers to the completion of this project has been immense and leaves us in awe and appreciative of the great community spirit of our parish.

Sympathies: Kilcummin GAA club wish to extend their sympathy to the family of Richie O’Callaghan formerly of Clounteens who passed away last week. A senior player from 1957 and the early sixties he was also club secretary in 1960/61 and played on the first ever Kilcummin u-14 team in 1954. May he rest in Peace.
Development Update: Progress continues unabated on the development and huge credit to volume of volunteers who have made this possible. Many have spent their Saturdays and evenings throughout the summer working on the project which is now nearing completion. The closing date for the “10 year membership” package, the upgrading package and the purchase of a Brick on the “wall of champions” is the end of this month and anyone who is considering these options should now approach a club officer. To those who have contributed in any way we say thank you and know you and your families will be delighted and appreciative of the finished product well into the future.
Kerry U-20’s: We wish Paul O Shea and his team mates the best of luck in the upcoming All Ireland Semi -Final against Galway next week.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship

Kilcummin 1-12

Dingle 0-18

If one expected Dingle to have an easy ride with this one, being that we were already destined for a relegation playoff, they reckoned without the spirit of this team. They matched favourites Dingle throughout until the last 10 minutes when their superior scoring power told and they ran out three point winners. Shane McSweeney was belying his years at midfield but had to retire early and we certainly felt his loss in those closing minutes.

A brilliant Kevin McCarthy goal, a penalty save by Brendan Kealy and some amazing points from Paul O’Shea were the highlights from a Kilcummin perspective but the never say die attitude and resilience of our players is a joy to behold and very encouraging going forward. We now face a relegation battle in an effort to maintain our senior status against Templenoe but first it’s Mid Kerry on Saturday August 22nd in the County Championship.

A warm welcome to Chris O’Leary who played his first game in a year after returning from Australia while we wish a speedy recovery to our injured players, Kieran Murphy, Enda O’Sullivan and Dan Moynihan.

Team: B Kealy, D Maher, K McSweeney, O O’Connor, Chris O Leary, S O Leary, J Nagle, K Gorman, S McSweeney, P O’Leary, G O’Leary, K McCarthy, N Duggan, P O’Shea, M Keane Subs Used: Mikey O’Shea and Danny Cronin

Senior County Championship

Kilcummin play Mid Kerry this Saturday in Fitzgerald stadium at 5pm. After three very competitive outings in the Club Championship we now focus on this knock out fixture which is a repeat of last year’s Round 2 tie which we won. We await a relegation fixture against Templenoe depending on County Championship results.

Minor County Championship

East Kerry play Legion in the county semi -final on Monday August 24th at 6pm. Best wishes to the numerous Kilcummin players who are part of the team and squad.

Sympathies

Kilcummin GAA club wish to extend their sympathies to the family of Margaret O’Connor who passed away last week.  May she rest in eternal peace.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship

Austin Stacks 2-5

Kilcummin 1-6

They say there is a thin line between defeat and victory and in this case, it was the width of the crossbar! With Stacks leading by two points deep in injury time Kilcummin mounted one last desperate attack. After carrying the ball, the full length of the field involving numerous players, Shane Mc Sweeney unleashed a rocket of a shot that smashed against the crossbar!

As Padraig O’Sullivan blew the final whistle you would have to feel disappointed for the players who had given it their all in a waterlogged Connolly Park as the result meant we finish bottom of the group and face a relegation battle between either Templenoe or Kerins O’Rahillys later in the year.

Stacks started much the better and lead by 1-2 to 0-1 after 15 minutes with Kilcummin struggling to get their hands on the ball. After the water break Kilcummin introduced Kevin McCarthy and his influence was very noticeable as we took control of the middle of the field and by half time had drawn level courtesy of points from Noel Duggan, Kevin O’Gorman, and Philip O’Leary.

The third quarter belonged to Kilcummin as we tagged on another point from a Noel Duggan free and when the same player was fouled when through on goal Paul O’Shea dispatched the penalty with aplomb. However, Stacks showed their resilience and finished much the stronger and following a goal by Shane O’Callaghan made again by Kieran Donaghy, they ran out two-point winners.

Kilcummin’s defence was outstanding on the night, none more so than Oscar O’Connor who had a stormer well supported by the likes of Donal Maher, James Nagle and Sean O’Leary.

Team: Brendan Kealy, Donal Maher, Kevin McSweeney, Paul O’Riordan, Oscar O’Connor, Sean O’Leary, James Nagle. Kevin O’Gorman (0-1), Shane McSweeney, Danny Cronin, Philip O’Leary (0-1), Gary O’Leary, Noel Duggan (0-4, 3f), Eoin O’Donovan, Paul O’Shea (1-0, 1p). Subs Used: Kevin McCarthy, Matt Keane

Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship

Round 1

Killarney Legion 0-15

Kilcummin 1-10

Our lads came up short in an enthralling game on Saturday evening when Legion kicked two points in time added on to clinch a narrow victory. We played without Kevin McCarthy and Enda O’Sullivan from the named team and lost Kieran Murphy before half-time, but we could be considered unlucky not to at least have earned a draw and a probable victory. Playing with the wind in the first-half we led by 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time courtesy of a superb goal from Kevin Gorman and some fine free taking from Noel Duggan.

With James O’Donoghue very influential for Legion the second half they went a point in front, but we rose to the task and driven on by the likes of Sean O’Leary and Paul O’Shea in particular. We created numerous opportunities and kicked some fine scores, but it was not to be as the crossbar and a late goalmouth scramble denied us. As well as the aforementioned players, very encouraging performances were given by the likes of Paul O’Riordan, Eoin O’Donovan and Danny Cronin in what was a good team display.

A minute silence was observed before the game for two deceased members of the Legion club and we sympathise with them in their tragic losses.

Team: Brendan Kealy, Donal Maher, Kevin McSweeney, Oscar O’Connor, Sean O’Leary, Dan Moynihan, James Nagle, Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy, Paul O’Riordan, Eoin O’Donovan, Gary O’Leary, Noel Duggan, Shane McSweeney, Paul O’Shea Subs Used: Danny Cronin, Matt Keane, Philip O’Leary, Damien O’Leary and Mikey O’Shea.
