Castleisland Mart Intermediate Club Championship

Kilcummin 3-11 Brosna 0-8

Played in Kilcummin in difficult conditions on Sunday last this game was vitally important to both teams. Kilcummin needed just a draw to secure a Semi-Final place while Brosna depending on other results could have also secured a Semi-Final spot or could have be dragged into a relegation battle.

From the outset this was evident, as both teams contested every ball with determination and matched each other score for score throughout the entire first half. It wasn’t until the final minute of the half when Kevin McCarthy finished to the net after a fine pass from Kieran Murphy that there was a little daylight between the teams. Brendan Kealy from a free, William Maher, Shane McSweeney and Gary O’Leary were the Kilcummin point scorers while Eamon Kiely, Adam Barry, Don McAuliffe and Tom McGoldrick from a free replied for Brosna.

Half time score Kilcummin 1-5 Brosna 0-4

The second-half started brightly with both teams exchanging further points, Brosna’s Darren Horan and Tom McGoldrick countering scores from Kilcummin’s Gary O’Leary and Noel Duggan. However  after 10 minutes, when Kevin McCarthy latched on to a mix up in the Brosna defence and set up a goal for Noel Duggan the game was effectively over from that point on. Brosna battled on however and further points Timmy Finnegan and a Tom McGoldrick free were their reward but Kilcummin were in complete control with Kieran Murphy lording midfield, Sean O’Leary giving a ‘Man-of-the-Match’ performance in defence and Kevin McCarthy making life difficult for Brosna defenders. Sean O’Leary, Shane McSweeney and Gary O’Leary added further points before Noel Duggan completed the scoring by finding the Brosna net two minutes from time. Brosna were a well organised and competitive team who had fine performers in Shane Fitzmaurice, Eamon Kiely, Peter Curtin and Don McAuliffe. Kilcummin now look forward to a semi final place and Daniel Moynihan, Donal Maher and Damien can also feel pleased with their performances.
