EAST KERRY FINAL: The Kilcummin Senior Team captured the div 1 title on Sunday following a hard earned victory over Firies, played in Listry. Firies opened proceedings with a point after one minute from play, with Kilcummin responding with an E O’Donoghue point from play with good play by D.J Fleming and D.Brosnan, and the later player tapped over a point in the 6th minute. Kilcummin moved further ahead when Padraig Kelly found himself in the Firies goal area, and connected with a fine cross field ball from Shane McSweeney to hit the Firies net, to put Kilcummin ahead 1-2 to 0-1 after eight minutes. Firies responded with a point in the 11th minute from play, and they missed a certain goal opportunity in the 14th minute. Kilcummin added two points from play from David Brosnan with assist from Daniel O’Leary, and a mighty effort from D.J Fleming in the 16th minute, and the final point came from Kilcummin following a great charge out of defence by Mike McCarthy, and being fouled with D.J Fleming tapping over to leave the interval score Kilcummin 1-5, Firies 0-3. Firies made an inspired start to the second half and rattled Kilcummin with five successive points to draw level after 11 minutes. Ritchie O’Connor replaced John Devane for Kilcummin and he was to play a significant role before events concluded. Kilcummin went ahead in the 16th minute with a good point from play by the hard working Daniel O’Leary, with good support from Mike McCarthy, and when David Brosnan added a point from a free in the 19th minute it looked like Kilcummin has fought off the invaders, but our neighbours were not finished as they added a point in the 20th minute. Sean B Doherty who was making a return to football after a year absence, replaced E O’Donoghue for Kilcummin, as Firies added another point from play in the 21st minute to leave the sides level, 1-7 to 0-10. The pace was hectic at this stage as both sides sought to hang on, and it was Firies who went ahead in the 30th minute with a point from play. We were now in injury time and Kilcummin balling for survival saw Kieran O’Donoghue, D.J Fleming and Ritchie O’Connor combining for the latter to tap over the equaliser to leave the sided level at full time Kilcummin 1-8 Firies 0-11. EXTRA TIME: Kilcummin dominated the opening period with a certain gaoling opportunity being missed, in the opening minute, and Padraig Kelly who worked hard throughout the game adding a point from play in the 3rd minute. Kilcummin added a second point from play in the 8th minute from David Brosnan, with support from Ritchie O’Connor. Ian Devane replaced Michael O’Sullivan for Kilcummin as Firies kept in touch with a point from play in the 9th minute. The killer score came in the 10th minute when Kieran O’Donoghue, Daniel O’Leary and Padraig Kelly, found Ritchie O’Connor in the edge of the square to slot home a Kilcummin goal to leave them ahead at the interval of extra time Kilcummin 2-10 Firies 0-12. Second Period: Eric O’Connor replaced John O’Keeffe for the final ten minutes for Kilcummin Daniel O’Leary added a point for Kilcummin with support from Killian Murphy, and David Brosnan, in the 4th minute, and as the Firies challenge began to fade the fitter Kilcummin side marshalled in defence by Mike McCarthy, added an excellent D.J Fleming point from play in the 5th minute. Daniel O’Leary was injured and replaced by Robert Carey as Kilcummin added two further points from a David Brosnan free in the 8th minute and the final score from captain Shane McSweeney in the 10th minute to leave the final score Kilcummin 2-14 Firies 0-12.
