Castleisland Mart Intermediate Championship Semi Final

Kilcummin 1-10 Templenoe 0-12

Our senior team have qualified for the Intermediate Final following a very hard fought win over Templenoe on Sunday last in Direen.

Playing against the wind in the first half we found it difficult to make much headway and relied on Frees from Brendan Kealy and Noel Duggan early on to give us some hope. Trailing 0-7 to 0-2 with about eight minutes left in the first half our midfield gained the upper hand and we finished the half strongly with Kevin McCarthy twice and Gary O’Leary pointing.

Half-Time Score: Templenoe 0-8 Kilcummin 0-5

The second-half saw a more determined Kilcummin take the game to their opponents and further points from Sean O’Leary and Shane McSweeney saw us trail by one point with 15 mins left. Enter Kevin McCarthy with the most telling moment of the game when receiving a pass from the industrious Noel Duggan he scythed through the Templenoe defence to drive an unstoppable shot to the net.

Noel Duggan added further frees before Templenoe put considerable pressure on backs but they were very disciplined and held out for a famous one point victory. In what was most definitely a 20 man effort in which they really had to dig deep Kevin McCarthy’s goal was a tremendous boost and motivator.

The defence well marshalled by Brendan Kealy were outstanding as a unit particularly in the first half when under considerable pressure with Philip Casey, Sean O’Leary and Donal Maher in particular very influential. Our midfield of Kieran Murphy and Kevin Gorman battled hard throughout even when things weren’t going their way and gained a fair measure of control in the second-half.

Kevin McCarthy was a revelation throughout and was well supported by Noel Duggan and Gary O’Leary, Shane McSweeney, Padraig Nagle, Damien O’Leary and Matt Keane in the second half all contributed to what was a great result as did substitutes Daniel O’Leary, John McCarthy and Kelvin Teahan.

By an ironic twist of faith our Oskars partners of the last four months Glenflesk will now become our opponents in the final. They had a great win over St Marys in the other semi-final the previous night and we congratulate them wishing them the best.

May the best team win.

Castleisland Mart Intermediate Club Championship

Kilcummin 3-11 Brosna 0-8

Played in Kilcummin in difficult conditions on Sunday last this game was vitally important to both teams. Kilcummin needed just a draw to secure a Semi-Final place while Brosna depending on other results could have also secured a Semi-Final spot or could have be dragged into a relegation battle.

From the outset this was evident, as both teams contested every ball with determination and matched each other score for score throughout the entire first half. It wasn’t until the final minute of the half when Kevin McCarthy finished to the net after a fine pass from Kieran Murphy that there was a little daylight between the teams. Brendan Kealy from a free, William Maher, Shane McSweeney and Gary O’Leary were the Kilcummin point scorers while Eamon Kiely, Adam Barry, Don McAuliffe and Tom McGoldrick from a free replied for Brosna.

Half time score Kilcummin 1-5 Brosna 0-4

The second-half started brightly with both teams exchanging further points, Brosna’s Darren Horan and Tom McGoldrick countering scores from Kilcummin’s Gary O’Leary and Noel Duggan. However  after 10 minutes, when Kevin McCarthy latched on to a mix up in the Brosna defence and set up a goal for Noel Duggan the game was effectively over from that point on. Brosna battled on however and further points Timmy Finnegan and a Tom McGoldrick free were their reward but Kilcummin were in complete control with Kieran Murphy lording midfield, Sean O’Leary giving a ‘Man-of-the-Match’ performance in defence and Kevin McCarthy making life difficult for Brosna defenders. Sean O’Leary, Shane McSweeney and Gary O’Leary added further points before Noel Duggan completed the scoring by finding the Brosna net two minutes from time. Brosna were a well organised and competitive team who had fine performers in Shane Fitzmaurice, Eamon Kiely, Peter Curtin and Don McAuliffe. Kilcummin now look forward to a semi final place and Daniel Moynihan, Donal Maher and Damien can also feel pleased with their performances.

Kilcummin: Brendan Kealy, Jamie O Donoghue, Daniel Moynihan, Sean O’Leary, Donal Maher, Philip Casey, William Maher, Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy, Shane McSweeney, Gary O’Leary, Padraig Nagle, Kevin McCarthy, Damien O’Leary, Noel Duggan. Subs Used: Mikey O’Shea, John McCarthy, Kelvin Teahan, Oscar O’Connor and Daniel O’Leary

Brosna: Paul Reidy, Gerard Nash, Shane Fitzmaurice,, Maurice O’Keeffe, Cillian Keane, Eamon Kiely, Peter Curtin, Timmy Finnegan, Shane Curtin, Adam Barry, Daniel Fitzgerald, Darren Horan, Patrick Moriarty, Don McAuliffe, Tom McGoldrick. Sub Used: Mike McAuliffe

Kerry Minors: Congratulations to Paul O’Shea who captained the Kerry Minor team to victory over Tipperary on Wednesday last and to Keith O’Leary who was substitute goalkeeper on the day. Well done lads and best of luck in the Munster Semi-Final next month.

Deepest Sympathies: Sympathy is extended to the family on Noreen O’Leary formerly of Cloonteens who died during the week. May she Rest in Peace.

Castleisland Co-Op Mart Intermediate Club Championship

Kilcummin 0-12 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-11

Returning to the Intermediate Championship after 20 years we got off to a winning start on Saturday last in Beaufort. In what was a close encounter throughout, we just about deserved to shade it considering the amount of possession we enjoyed. However the number of wides kicked will give the management team cause for deliberation before taking on Milltown Castlemaine at the week end.

In a defence that played well overall, Sean O Leary, Donal Maher and William Maher excelled while Kieran Murphy continued his good form in the centre and the fact that all the forwards managed to get on the scoresheet is a positive outcome.

Team: Brendan Kealy, Jamie O Donoghue, Daniel Moynihan, Sean O Leary (0-1), Donal Maher, Philip Casey, William Maher, Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy (0-2) Shane McSweeney (0-1), Gary O Leary, (0-1), Padraig Nagle, (0-2), Kevin McCarthy (0-1), Damien O Leary (0-1), Noel Duggan (0-3) Subs Used: Mikey O’Shea, John McCarthy and Matt Keane.

Next outing on Sunday at 2.30 in Milltown v Milltown /Castlemaine

OSKARS:  This was a massive success last Thursday night in the INEC. We appreciate the efforts of the committee, the performers, sponsors and the community at large who supported the event. A special word of thanks to Glenflesk GAA Club on what was a wonderful experience of friendship and co-operation. More about the OSKARS in the coming weeks.
